Program Overview

Florida International University’s Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology prepares students to study marine organisms, ocean ecosystems, and the environmental challenges affecting coastal communities. The program combines biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and oceanography with laboratory research and hands-on field experiences.

Students study subjects including marine ecology, organismal diversity, physiology, evolution, genetics, conservation, and physical oceanography. Marine Biology program activities and most upper-level coursework are concentrated at FIU’s waterfront Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.

Education and Career Pathways

The program can prepare graduates for careers in marine research, fisheries, environmental consulting, conservation, natural-resource management, aquariums, government agencies, education, and nonprofit organizations. It also provides preparation for graduate or professional study in marine biology, ecology, oceanography, and related sciences.

FIU’s broader marine research community studies coral reefs, sharks, seagrass habitats, fisheries, ocean health, and climate-related changes to coastal ecosystems. Its marine resources include the Medina Aquarius Program and Aquarius Reef Base, the world’s only undersea research laboratory. FIU also offers an undergraduate Certificate in Coastal and Marine Affairs for students interested in combining marine science with conservation, policy, governance, and resource management.
