Program Overview
SUNY Maritime College is a public maritime college located on the waterfront in the Bronx, New York. The college prepares students for careers aboard commercial vessels and throughout the shoreside maritime industry through academic study, technical training, leadership development, simulators, and practical experience at sea.
Students pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard license must participate in the Regiment of Cadets, a structured leadership program designed to prepare cadets for the responsibilities and working environment found aboard vessels. The Regiment is not affiliated with the military and does not carry a military service obligation.
Education and Career Pathways
SUNY Maritime offers undergraduate degree programs in marine transportation, marine operations, engineering, naval architecture, maritime studies, marine environmental science, and other maritime fields. Several majors can be combined with an unlimited U.S. Coast Guard deck or engine license pathway.
Deck-license students prepare for careers as Third Mates responsible for navigation, cargo operations, vessel safety, and deck operations. Engine-license students prepare for Third Assistant Engineer positions involving propulsion, electrical systems, machinery, maintenance, and other shipboard engineering responsibilities. Students must complete the required academic and licensing curriculum and pass the applicable U.S. Coast Guard examination to graduate from an unlimited-license program.
License candidates complete three seagoing training experiences through Summer Sea Terms aboard the Training Ship Empire State VII or through an approved cadet-shipping assignment aboard an operating commercial or government vessel. These experiences include watchstanding, vessel maintenance, emergency drills, technical instruction, and leadership development.
